Last summer, I didn’t have time or energy to plant any window boxes — just getting the apartment set up felt like plenty! This year, for my birthday, I decided to gift myself a little patch of green. It makes me happy to get my hands into the dirt, even if it’s only a few liters of it.

A little bit of green out on the balcony.

I planted basil, chives, and parsley in the window box; mint (which is a space-hog) and lemon thyme (which likes to be drier than the tender-stemmed herbs) are in pots of their own. They’re still settling in, but doing well, as you can see.

But the most thrilling thing is that my patio tomato already has a little ripe gem on it. I can’t wait to pop it into my mouth.

Why, hello there, little tuh-mater!

Still to come — a flower pot full of “cut and come again” lettuce mix. I just picked the seeds up from my florist, and it’s going to be such a luxury to go out and snip my salad straight into the bowl!
