Number Two nephew, a/k/a The Red-Headed Monkey Boy, is currently in residence. He’s often seen dashing in and out of the house with his two pals, who live across the street, in tow. And even though it’s a distraction from work, it’s a lot of fun. They spend time in the basement building things out of scrap lumber and homosote, covering themselves in dust and paint in the process. They conduct spy missions in the rhododendrons under the window. They watch “Supah Ninjas” and giggle like fiends. They are good boys, and good friends.

As the oldest of five sisters, I also feel a certain anthropological interest in observing boys in their unencumbered state. My oldest nephew is 11, the youngest 6. There’s lots of time until the last of them gets all hormonal and weird. I’m looking forward to the show…
