“Desert Island Discs” is a long-running — since 1942! — BBC program which invites its guests to choose eight “records” that they would take with them to a desert island. (You can listen to it here.)

Pack your sarongs, too!

Since summertime means that I pare my makeup routine way back, I was thinking today about what my “desert island daubs” would be — but since eight, while a reasonable number of discs, is a pretty big number of products (for me), I thought I’d go down to six. Here they are, in order of application!

La Roche Posay Anthelios SX Moisturizer SPF 15 – because with my super-pale, burn-prone skin, I use sunscreen 365 days a year, this one’s a no-brainer. Highly recommended by dermatologists, and worth every penny.

Bare Minerals Tinted Mineral Veil SPF 25 – I can’t be bothered with the full mineral makeup routine in the summer, but this works a treat. SPF 25 is a bonus. (Remember that if you use two products with sunscreen, the protective effect isn’t cumulative. I’d only get SPF 25 out of the moisturizer plus Mineral Veil combo, not 40.) If I were dining out on my desert island, I’d also sweep a little of this across my eyelids. Makes a really lovely eyeshadow!

Almay One Coat Triple Effect Waterproof Mascara — I may be on a deserted island, but I still want lashes! And waterproof’s the way to go in the summer, no doubt about it. This one’s especially good for sensitive eyes, and for contact-wearers.

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Eyeliner – Even with mascara, my eyes don’t feel “done” until I’ve got a little pencil on. When I’m a little bit tan (which is as tan as I get), it just makes my eyes pop more. This one is excellent – I prefer an eye pencil that I can sharpen the old-fashioned way, since the ones with the built-in sharpener never get sharp enough for me.

Trader Joe’s Virtuoso Lip Balm – At three tubes for $3 or so, these are a bargain, and I’ve never found a lip balm I like better. Minty, SPF 15, and 50% organic. What’s not to like? (OK, I don’t like it a lot when my cat, The Zooze, climbs on my lap so she can lick it off, but that’s not a product flaw, that’s a pet flaw.)

Bare Minerals 100% Natural Lip Gloss – This gloss is super-moisturizing and has great staying power. My favorite summer color is “Sangria.” It’s a nice peachy pink that looks great with every color in one’s wardrobe. You want your lip color to coordinate with your sarong, don’t you?

So, dear ones, what would you pack in your desert island escape kit? Do tell!
